Yael Bar Tur is a digital strategist specializing in law enforcement, private & public sector communications. She was stranded in the Dominican Republic in 2010 when she discovered the power of social media. It was days after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, and she was an Israeli Defense Force reservist, trying to make her way to the military field hospital to serve as a communications specialist. With no ability to cross the border, she tweeted out asking if anyone can help her get on a flight from Santo Domingo to Port-Au-Prince. Within a few hours she was on the phone with a helper, and the next day she flew to her destination.
Since then she completed her Master’s in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of government, writing her graduate thesis on the NYPD’s use of social media (there wasn’t any!) After a role as Director of Marketing for Friends of the IDF, she joined the NYPD in 2014, building the entire digital communications strategy. she left in 2020 after creating a decentralized social media apparatus and a few fun viral hits with an incredible team of officers and civilians. She created over 200 new social media accounts which amassed over 1 million followers, a new “Digital Communication Officer” role in every command in the city, a comprehensive training guide and program, and amazing relationships for the rest of her life.
