Prevention of Domestic violence and Cassi Carli

Prevention of Domestic violence and Cassi Carli

Prevention of Domestic violence and Cassi Carli

Cassie Carli's disappearance has focused the attention on the issue of domestic violence, even though many details have not been released surrounding her death.  On Sunday, Sheriff Bob Johnson was asked if Carli and her ex-boyfriend Marcus Spanevelo had any domestic violence history. He said he believed Carli had filed a domestic violence injunction. Court records reveal several domestic-related cases between Cassi Carli and Marcus Spanevelo  two, that have been filed in at least two Northwest Florida counties.  Reporters spoke to the Executive Director for Safe Connections, a non-profit that provides supervised visitation and safe exchanges for families who are dealing with abuse or domestic violence.  "We need the victims out there to know that we're here and that they can reach out to us," Sharon Rogers said. "They can have their attorneys reach out to us."  Rogers says they basically stand between a victimized parent and their victimizer to ensure custody exchanges are safe as they can be.  "We will get them set up, talk to both parents, and figure out a time a day that they need to exchange," Rogers said. "We work with what the court has given them, what our hours are, what their limitations are, and we find the safest way to do their child exchange."  She says hearing that Carli was last seen after doing a custody exchange of her 4-year-old daughter Saylor is heartbreaking.  "We have all been just sick, absolutely sick about it," Rogers said. "Because this is what we do. It just sickens us."  She tells Channel she wants to make sure that moving forward no other family has to go through what the Carli's are.  "Nobody that's in a case of any allegation of domestic violence will pay anything," Rogers said. "We provide our services without charge."  The non-profit has three locations in Okaloosa and Walton counties where people can also safely make custody exchanges.
